Engaging Our Team in Innovation

Innovation is critical for every organization's success. Yet, many organizations fail to innovate -- and this failure is an expensive oversight -- something that causes billions of dollars in lost worker productivity in the United States. But innovation does not have to be dramatic or earth shattering. In fact, according to the Japanese Kaizen concept, most innovation occurs through iteration, and small, incremental adjustments.

Empowerment, teamwork, collaboration, and communication (including constructive criticism) are critical elements for allowing such incremental adjustments to occur within teams and organizations. During my twelve year tenure as CIO at two different organizations, I used a simple technique to produce remarkable results. I instituted regular team meetings with rotating meeting chairs and note takers for each meeting. Everyone took turns at leading meetings, taking notes, writing and distributing the minutes, and setting the agenda. This system ensured the following:
